Auckland Sports Massage at Sunshine Coast Half Ironman

Auckland Sports Massages second outing oversees, woo hoo!

… and here we go again! Jetting off into the sunset for another (Half-) Ironman event of our sponsored athlete extraordinaire Shayne Goodwin (it helps if you know the masseuse!). Travelling into Malloolabah direct from Auckland could not have been easier, absolute piece of cake and quite amusing seeing that many bike bags at the check in (though poor Ryan did not realize they don’t transport them for free any more, so there goes another $150 each way for extra luggage…).

Sports massage before an event is really just part of the taper. At that stage of preparations, nobody want to be suffering with DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) or a bit of  ‘massage after burn’, so softly softly does it and sports massage becomes a flushing out of sorts. Nevertheless who said sports massage can’t be enjoyable ? First time I ever had anybody fall asleep! Woo hoo!

On that note with the upcoming Auckland Marathon, patients have been asking me when they should best be having their regular sports massage as part of their preparation for the marathon. I always recommend a weekly hour long massage, especially leading up to the event. You will see benefits in your recovery after any massage, but either the day (or 2) after the long run or 2 days before seem to be particularly good times at helping with restoring muscle function.

Better get in quick, we have been flat stick booked up for some time, but will have some late cancellations on a number of days.

So back to Sunshine Coast. The event was pretty much what you would expect of the Ironman brand: Plenty of excitement, good planning , enthusiastic participants and in this case also a very spectator friendly course layout. The day started with an absolutely beautiful sunrise and didn’t disappoint in terms of weather. Hot Hot Hot. But thankfully not as extreme as some have been warning us of. Our team of Go2Max (see http://www.go2max.co.nz ) did superb (well, it is what we have come to expect, but always glad to see everybody finish with no major hiccups or distractions!)

Sports massage should play an essential part of anybody’s preparation for an endurance event, but nobody could put it any sweeter than this athlete (who shall remain nameless to spare him the blushing): ‘ My favorite part of being out there week after week working my guts out is knowing, that I have really deserved this massage. Without it – more cramp , recovery takes longer, more fatigue. It’s a no brainer.  And sometimes: Boy – just hurts so good !’
