Ok, so how many of you are calling yourselves an athlete ? Right – obviously a seasoned sports person is entitled to have sports massages, because they have been training a long time, are at a good level of fitness and can generally call themselves ‘sporty’! But what about those of us only at the beginning of a journey to our first 10K fun run, first relay team event or even just aiming for a first half hour jog without stopping ? Can sports massage benefit the weekend warrior ? Oh yes it can !
Sports massage is designed to assist in your recovery from exercise. All levels included. It is not just for those of us, who are chasing a new personal best or a record. Some evidence even suggests that those who have yet some way to go in our fitness benefit most from a vigorous sports massage, because greater recovery is needed. Sports massage is a scary term for some, but really it just describes a treatment after your sporting activity to help with DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) , dispersal of lactic acid and the minimisation of inflammation.
So here we are, sporty spice ! Get your groove on and your trainers and go for a jog/ run/ sprint down the road- your massage therapist and your regular massage will get you to the finish line!
