Events , events, events !

I simply have to tell you about the Routeburn Classic I did last month. It is one of those running events, that has been on my list for a long time, but I was never sure my off road credentials were good enough to cope with the wild and wonderful nature of it (and the hills to go with it!).

On the day, alas, it was not to be. A gnarly front of weather came through just as the event was due to start and it had to be postponed to the following day.  Trying to change flights back to Auckland, accommodation and other travel arrangements though made it all but impossible. And just when we had all but come to terms with not being able to complete this amazing running event, a group of intrepid runners sat next to us and started plotting to go out on the track anyways, as the weather had passed and the track was open to trampers anyways.

As it was, we had to take a slightly unusual approach, think feel the fear and do it anyways, but it was worth it all the way . And what’s even more amazing is to think we could have gone all that way and missed out, were it not for the old Kiwi ‘give it a go’ spirit. And I am so glad we did!

Other running events our customers have reported on over the last couple of months were:

The inaugural Air New Zealand  Hawkes Bay Marathon : Great reviews all around, well organized and cheerful – even if the heat and the long straights did catch some people out (Sunburn in late may ??).

The wonderful xterra trailrun series continued with their Shakespeare leg and I am told was awesome as always, even if crossing a stretch of coastline waste deep (!) had some runners worried about their i pods 🙂 Thumbs up to Total Sports events !xterra

As always, plenty of good reasons to get yourself out there and of course : Enjoy a massage afterwards!

Happy massaging as always,

Carmen

Lotions and Potions

So often I am asked by our customers : ‘ Should I  use a heat pack ? ‘ ‘ Should I put Anti-Flamme on it ?’ or ‘ Should I ice it ?’ Lotions and potions are our best friends, when it comes to soothing our hard working bodies. Next to having a massage, putting a cream on is one of the most rewarding things you can do after a big work out. But should it be hot, cold or neither ?

So it is high time for me to give you a quick run down of the proper uses of all our lotions and potions.

Ice packs or Cooling Gel :   polar_gel_large

Cooling gels or ice packs are best used when an injury is fairly new. Having said that, there are benefits to icing even an existing injury. Polar Frost Cold Gel is specially formulated to provide soothing relief for soft tissue injuries, stress injuries, muscle tension, inflammation and stiffness. Aloe Vera has an anti-inflammatory effect and it keeps the skin smooth and moist throughout the treatment. Alternatively an ice pack (frozen peas ?) can be applied 20 mins at a time, wrapped in a towel so as not to touch the skin directly.

Heat Packs or heat cream:

HOT-RUB_medium

Hot Rub helps maintain muscle temperature to prevent injury. Ideal to use as part of a warm up program before an event or training. It can also be used for treating tight muscles, which are not injured, but need a bit of comfort or TLC. Most creams use capsaicin to warm the skin, but some people may find this a little irritating to the skin. As an alternative a wheat bag can be used to soothe the area, perhaps a little more comforting in winter.

Anti- Flamme:

antiflamme

Anti-Flamme Herbal Creme soothes strained muscles, joint aches, bumps, bruises and common sports injuries. Anti-Flamme contains natural ingredients such as lavender and arnica and is used and recommended by NZ Physiotherapists. Take a liberal amount and rub lovingly!

Running slower to get faster!

My last post for this year is predictably based around getting over Xmas lunch and the hang-over from that amazing New Year’s Eve party. Well, kind of . While I am sure you can not wait to get your diary out for next year and earmark all those events you are going to enter once the festive season is over, remember this : Before you get going , take a moment to evaluate the year that has been. Maybe it is time to consider this crazy idea : Running slower to get faster (and who doesn’t want to do that!).

Jeff Gaudete, who writes a great running blog runnersconnect.net, which I enjoy tremendously. Sometimes less is simply more, and he will tell you all about that.

Having said this though, I am very excited to be taking on my first Ultra this year, the Keppler Challenge 60 km marathon. Yes, I know what you are saying: Registrations are still closed until June, but hey – gotta think positive !

I will be using the Asics run app, which has gotten me safely through my last marathon, but am open to suggestions for where to look for a training app, so feel free to message me your suggestions below ! I will keep you posted on how things go , fingers crossed !

And last but not least, I want to thank everybody for making this year one to remember. I feel completely blessed to be able to have such wonderful cyclists, runners, triathletes and all out sports enthusiasts to call my customers. The year sure did start out on one heck of a challenge with hubby Shayne breaking his neck in a cycling crash and the ensuing challenge of recovery. I look back and am so grateful for his recovery, my return to sanity and the enormous love and support from all that have gotten us back to wonderful, comfortable , normal!

Get your running shoes on and have a great New Year 2016 , ya’ll !

Happy running as always,

Myofascial release – a massage technique explained

Every once in a while a new new ‘buzz word’ enters the sphere of massage techniques.  At the moment it seems this is very much the case with myofascial release. ‘What is it?’ my customers ask me. ‘Is it like deep tissue?’

Well, the answer is that myofascial release technique is very much an extension of deep tissue massage techniques. Myo, meaning muscle and fascia, the sheet or band of fibrous connective tissue enveloping, separating, or binding together muscles. The focus is thus on the structures surrounding muscles, as well as the muscle itself. To give you an example,  if we were treating sciatica in the lower back and glute area with deep tissue massage, we would work on the gluteus medius, the piriformis and other hip flexors as well as the hamstring attachment points into the illium. See below of an illustration of the muscles in the area.myofascial release

In myofascial release, the treatment would focus on the same muscles, deeply working into the tissue with slow and direct pressure, as well as stretching the leg and hamstrings. See this massage tutorial to get an idea of what myofascial release looks like. We can see that there is a distinct similarity to deep tissue massage and other remedial massage techniques, where the focus of the treatment is very detailed and specific to a particular area.

It is definitively great to see new massage styles and techniques being developed. For most conditions we treat with Deep tissue massage, myofascial release could also be explored, especially for long stubborn conditions, which have been lingering for some time. It might just be the missing piece to solve the puzzle.

And as always, if you have any questions at all – please do feel free to ask.

Happy massaging as always,

Sports Massage Auckland CBD

Sports massage Auckland CBD , the heart of commerce of the biggest city in the country, epicenter of the business pulse of town and full of hardworking commuters. And also, you might be surprised to hear, a very determined lot of people to pursue health and fitness aims despite having to spend the majority of the week in the confined space of an office, perhaps sitting behind a desk. Good on you ! You –  the lunchtime runners, you – the mid day yogis and you – the urban athlete extraordinaire. Unsurprising then perhaps that sports massage in Auckland’s CBD has grown exponentially year on year, with more and more people understanding the benefits of helping their muscles recover quicker and relax better, so that they can continue to be the (not only) weekend warrior and spend more Saturday mornings on the sports field.  Sports massage in Auckland’s CBD has become one of our busiest services. Ahead of even after hours treatments and weekend treatments. A while back I explained just what the benefits of massage were (see our home page https://aucklandtherapeuticmassage.co.nz/ ), but I wanted to add the specific benefits of sports massage.

Sports massage’s aim is to help athletes recover better and ideally avoid injury from overuse. By helping muscles to recover from exercise, we create more blood flow, which in turn brings more nutrients to the muscles and helps to rebuild tissue. Sports massage helps to extend fiber , stretching and manipulating areas, which may naturally contract after exercise and helps remove lactic acid (though this is now thought to have less of an impact on recovery than previously thought). We also have more and more evidence, that sports massage can help prevent post exercise inflammation, as was demonstrated in a recent study by Dr Simon Melov ( as reported in the Huffinton Post recently, click here to see the full article ). In this study tissue sample from cyclists showed less inflammatory markers after a massage, than without a massage.

So next time you are looking for a Sports Massage in Auckland’s CBD, remember all those benefits it will bring to you and that is on top of enjoying a well deserved bit of down time, just giving your body over to somebody else!

Relax, and let’s do it soon !

A legend at ‘The Legend’ or how to run 100 marathons !

We all know a person, who inspired us to lace up our shoes. Sometimes they are admired from afar, sometimes they are sporting stars extraordinaire: Usain Bolt , Haile Gebrselassie … But you don’t have to be Jamaican or Ethiopian to be a champion runner in my books! Right here in our own backyard is all the inspiration you could possibly need:

Enter :  Kiri Price  , who will this September run her 100th marathon at the aptly named ‘Legend’ marathon in West Auckland. The Legend or as it is properly called ‘The Lydiard Legend Marathon’ is described on their website as :

‘The Arthur Lydiard Legend events were created in conjunction with the master coach himself, on courses that have produced our most famous and successful Olympic athletes, the likes of Peter Snell, Murray Halberg, Barry Magee, Bill Bailey and many others…The Legend event is steeped in history and was developed with Arthur Lydiard himself prior to his passing in 2004 – this event was not meant to be a memorial to the great man, and has become a major road run/walk event in the calendar.’

See the amazing New Zealand Herald article on Kiri’s adventure.

Aptly named and steeped in history to mark the amazing feat that is Kiri’s 100th x 42.2 km.  Yes – 100 !! And not only that. Kiri will run this one with 100 friends, family and supporters all wearing purple to mark the occasion ( I dare say, I put my hand up, too !)

Kiri is an inspiration on so many levels, not only is she one of the most humblest persons you will ever meet, but as a running coach at the Millennium Institute www.autmillennium.org.nz and with Get Running www.getrunning.co.nz  she has literally helped hundreds of people to see beyond what they thought may be possible and encourage believe, where often we fail to imagine and all of them ran marathons. And as if that was not enough, she has run countless kilometers with blind and disabled runners in support of   http://www.achillesnewzealand.org/  at the New York marathon and many other events around the world.

This is our chance to give back to Kiri ! Please, if you want to see history in the making, join us as spectator or even better still as runner at the http://thelegend.co.nz/  or find Kiri’s 100th on Facebook !

Happy running as always,

Carmen

Ironman New Zealand 2015 – Bring it on , Taupo!

Ok, ok – I say this every year : Ironman , shmironman , over it … And then it get’s to a week out and I just can’t contain my enthusiasm! I am so excited to see so many of you cross the finish line, get to the pinnacle of your achievements and finally ‘knock the b*****d off’ !

Toni (and hubby David), Ivan, Sean, Donna, Chris, Robbie, Mark, John, Ruth, Karen, Ricki, Caroline, David D.  , thank you for your dedication and commitment ! I know that at times having your weekly massage would have felt like that extra hour you could have spent training, but I know (and you know ) it has given you the recovery you needed to keep going. WELL DONE to get to this point, go hard and do yourselves proud.

All of the GO2Max crew, Stephen, Vanessa, Anna, Reece, Ryan and everybody else – you are awesome , go get ’em! We will be at the turn around in Riporoa, so go round nice and slow so we can spot you 🙂

And last but not least if you are down there checking out Ironman NZ 2016 , go and see some of the exhibitors at the expo: Jason of Triathletes Corner, Em’s power cookies and of course all the massage providers , who have spent all week down there in the tent, away from their respective clinics to be there.

As every year, I will be down there all over the course, ready to call out your name (though I do avoid the old ‘looking good’ or ‘not far now’ ).  This year though , instead of cheering on hubby, he will be right  at my side – with a bit of luck halo freshly removed –  and envious of every second not spend on the course. Counting down to next year.

Good luck and great racing – and see you on the massage table next week 🙂

Happy massaging as always,

Carmen

New year, new beginnings

The end of the year offers great opportunity to look back: The races past, the training gone through, the results gotten and hopefully the injuries avoided. New year, new beginnings: Looking ahead and looking at races, looking at training schedules and looking at races coming up in the year. And hopefully injuries to be avoided.
The great thing about facturing a massage into your weekly routine is that it improves your recovery, improves the way you can train and hopefully avoid injuries. Wait – make that definitively avoid injury. Like many of my customers would confirm to you the difference between feeling half recovered and feeling great is having had a massage in between sessions. Less inflammation, improved circulation and better range of motion are just some of the benefits regular massage can deliver to you.
As we are counting down the weeks to Ironman New Zealand in Taupo (yes, it is that time of the year again) we are also getting to some of the most strenuous training sessions any endurance athletes experiences. The peak training session, when we are training in the rare top 10 % of performance, the extra miles area really adding up. Accumulated fatigue becomes a crucial factor in building strength. It is ever more important to recover well. I recommend to my athletes to schedule your recovery massage 24 to 48 hours after your hardest session, so that the effects of delayed onset muscle soreness have started to subside, so that massage can be more effective. Quite simply put in this context it is not about ‘no pain, no gain’, but is actually the other way around ‘ more gain with no pain’.

And just a little word of advice: Early bird catches the worm – please make sure you book your appointments early. As we are getting closer to the first week of March, you will struggle to book unless you got in well ahead !

Happy massaging ,
your team at Auckland Therapeutic Massage
